SHREWSBURY TOWN TOURNAMENT - 8TH JULY 2007

Stafford Rangers Under 11 team did extremely well in a very competitive tournament hosted by Shrewsbury Town F.C. last Sunday (8th July) and played on an immaculate surface despite all the recent rain.Facing teams from Aldridge, Market Drayton, Bishops Castle and Cannock in their group, Rangers won through as the group winners. In the quarter- final the team faced Sedgely White Lions and convincingly won 4-0. They fared even better in the semis with a dominant performance to overwhelm Aldridge 6-0. In the final they squandered chances galore before man of the tournament Alex Curtis gave them the lead against Tower F.C. However a mistimed defensive header and a speculative effort with only two minutes remaining meant the final went into extra-time. Despite having a shot count of 17 to Towers' 4 Rangers could not pierce the determined rearguard although the woodwork was hit more than once. Penalties have not been lucky for Rangers and so it proved again with Towers winning after sudden-death despite keeper Matt Tidswell saving three spot-kicks. Although only beaten finalists, there were plenty of plaudits who said that Rangers had been the best team in the competition. The following were a credit to the Rangers:Matt Tidswell, Rhys Burley, Josh Johnson, Jake Bullough, Josh Oldham, Joe Kroll, Dan Starkey, Liam Haycock and Alex Curtis.
